Some Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Some Girls
Album: Heaven's Pregnant Teens
Death Face

Waddaya get when ya mix one part mathcore, two parts grindcore, and 1/4 cup noise rock into a gristly musical stew?  Some Girls.

One brutal riff played for nine minutes without interruption.  'Nuff said.

Ape...ape...ape...ape....

Okay.  If this isn't your cup of tea, here's the way you approach it.  As you hit the three or four minute mark, try sitting in the lotus position, repeating the koan "If you meet the Buddha, kill him," and breathing through your eyelids.

Some Girls.  The music of Zen.

  1. Oh man, nice. Finally a post that I believe only you and I will enjoy David. I don't understand why, but I have yet to meet another person to appreciate this music. Napalm Death is amazing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they were one of the pioneering groups in grindcore. And of course, Hella. Zach Hill on drums, who is also the drummer for our fav, Marnie Stern. :D

How long do you think it will take for a larger portion of society to become accustomed to such new forms of music? By far the most under-appreciated music I think you've posted to date. What do you think?

  3. Yeah Napalm Death is old school. They're not my favorite band in the genre but they certainly exemplify it well. Actually, of the three bands I link to above I am most impressed with Rolo Tomassi. Not least of which because of the hot lead singer, but also because the music is not merely a brutal assault; it's nuanced, with jazz-like elements, crooned melody...excellent stuff. Reminds me of John Zorn's music.

I don't think it will take all that long for bands like Rolo Tomassi to become part of the larger musical lexicon; Some Girls will take longer however. In some ways, SG just about hits the wall in terms of lack of accessibility. But just as Sex Pistols sound tame now and spawned a generation of popular faux-punk bands like Green Day, Blink 182 etc, so too will Rolo Tomassi be considered very accessible a generation later, and so too will bands like Some Girls be acclaimed within the "alternative" music press. Maybe another generation for SG to be considered accessible. I really do think it's likely that in due time bands like SG will achieve a measure of popular success: their music has more than a small measure of Reich-ian minimalism and I find "Death Face" Zen-like. Maybe New Age music in 2050 will feature Some Girls instead of lilting pan flutes.

  4. I understand the Zen aspect completely, but also see how easily most people would just hear noise and disregard it as any form of music, which saddens me.

  5. No need to be sad, dude. It's all cool. People's tastes are shaped by their environments. It's not that people lack the capacity to hear this as music, it's just that they have never had the opportunity to hear this as music. Thus, this blog.
