The Jesus Lizard
Album: Goat
Song: Mouth Breather
Lightning Bolt wouldn't exist without them. 'Nuff said.
Perhaps the greatest band of the American underground noise rock scene in the early 90s, and led by the inimitable Dave Yow, The Jesus Lizard spent a hell of a lot of time on my turntable back in the day. Goat, produced by Steve Albini of Big Black* fame, is considered their best record and it features on many "Best Of" lists from the decade.
And how many hard rock tunes do you know of that spin in 6/8 time?
* Thanks, GC.

What did Albini do with Ministry?
ReplyDeleteHah! Good catch. Mixed up Jourgensen = Ministry with Albini = Big Black.
ReplyDeleteI think 6/8 works for the genre. Why not more?
ReplyDeleteActually, upon second listening the time signature is definitely 12/8. Which also works for the genre. I think some of the best hard rock and metal bands write in asymmetrical time signatures, but you're absolutely right than compound meters like 6/8 or 12/8 are rarely featured. Perhaps because the "lilting" or "skpping" nature of the meter doesn't easily lend itself to harder music...
ReplyDeleteHoly crap! How did I not know about this group? Time for daddy to go acquire himself a discography...
ReplyDeleteGoat is their best album. I also really like Liar.
